Cheerleading Is it a sport or not?

Cheerleading… Is it a sport or not? This is a common question asked among many people, especially in high school. Cheerleading is, in fact, a sport. Many people look at cheerleading the way it used to be in the early 1900s up through the 1970s. Towards the end of the 1970s and beginning of the 1980s, cheerleading turned into a real sport. It was no longer a group of girls in skirts and sweaters jumping up and down with pom-poms yelling, “Rah! Rah! Go Team, Go!” It has become an intense and competitive sport, much like football, basketball and baseball.

As cheerleading has progressed, the athletic ability required rose to a very intense level. The uniforms are still quite similar – a skirt, a tight shell and body liner – but the entire sport has grown to a nationwide, competitive sport. Squads all around the United States support their high school and college teams, specifically football and basketball, cheering on the teams and getting the crowd excited too. But like I said, the athletic ability required is far more than ever before.
