Sony’s new handheld games console was one of the worst-kept secrets of E3 – photos of the PSP Go leaked online days ahead of the official press conference.
The sleek, new-look console, which features a smaller screen than its predecessor, the PSP 3000, also does away with the UMD disk slot for games, instead boasting 16GB of flash memory for storing thousands of games, songs and movies on. It’s lighter than the PSP 3000 too, and Sony obviously sees the Go a something of a competitor to Apple’s iPod touch.
The slide-out control pad has divided opinion, but the configuration of buttons is almost identical to previous PSPs. Perhaps somewhat disappointingly, there’s still only one analogue stick, and that’s positioned a little more centrally on the control pad than is usually the case, which may take some getting used to for PSP fans.
Syncing files on to the device should be simplified by the new Media Go software, and users will be able to download music and television shows directly to the console over a Wi-Fi network without first having to go via a computer.
The line-up of games for the Go looks very promising, with Little BigPlanet, Gran Turismo, Jak and Daxter and Metal Gear Solid among some of the first titles announced.
But whether that will be enough to persuade existing PSP owners to upgrade to this smaller, more portable device remains to be seen. In truth, the Go is most likely to appeal to newcomers, or those considering splashing out on an iPod touch for their gaming fix on the morning commute.
